QuickStart:

HexWeb XT requires little customization to get started. The most important setting is to tell the XTension into which root directory the HTML and graphics files will be saved.

1. Copy the HexWeb XT XTension to your hard drive and place it in the XTension folder of your QuarkXPress® directory. If QuarkXPress is currently running, quit and restart to load HexWeb XT.

The following dialog informs you that HexWeb XT loaded successfully:

2. Open the XPress 3.31 Test Document we delivered to you with these files.

3. Select "HexWeb XT..." under the "Preferences" menu in the QuarkXPress menu, Edit>Preferences>HexWeb XT...

4. HexWeb XT has the ability to create a complete Web server structure from within QuarkXPress as it exports HTML files. Therefore, it is important to tell HexWeb XT which folder is the root Web structure directory.

For this exercise, choose the Archive folder in the "HexWeb_XT _folder...

Select Define Mainpath...

... and then choose the Archive folder. This folder will be your Web server root directory for this exercise.

 [InlineGrafix-7.gif]

As you can see there are already various folders and documents in the Archive folder.
These existing elements will either be automatically included or optionally available for inclusion in every exported HTML file.

5. Now, with the sample document open, and the main path defined, you can open the HexWeb Export dialog and either register HexWeb XT or use it in Demo mode.

Select the QuarkXPress menu Utilities>Open HexWeb Export.

In the resulting dialog you have the choice of registering your copy of HexWeb XT:
If you have purchased HexWeb XT, you have received two keys with the XTension; a name key and a registration key. To register, type them in exactly as they were provided to you. You will only need to register HexWeb XT once, but keep a copy of both keys in a secure location in case you ever need to re-install the XTension.

If you are working with HexWeb XT in demo mode and have no registration keys,
select Demoversion, only 3 exports.

In Demoversion, HexWeb XT will only perform 3 HTML exports before becoming disabled, and XPress has to be restarted to work again. HexWeb XT also adds a black triangle to the upper left corner of all exported images, to indicate that you are using a demo version.

After registering or selecting Demoversion, the following dialog will appear. Here you can define into which category directory your HTML file will be saved in the Web server directory structure.

Type in the year 1997 in the first text field. Fill in the issue number for your publication, type in a file name, and then select the category from the second pop-up menu into which this sample file should be exported, or type a folder name to create a new category.

Fill in the headline and sub-head fields with appropriate article headlines. Select the text in the XPress document you want included as the headline, and click on the Headline button. The selected text will be automatically placed in the Headline field. Alternatively, you can type your own headline in the field. Repeat the exercise for the text you wish to be used as a sub-head for the exported article. Both of these headlines will later be visible in the table of contents and will act as the descriptors of this article.

The Export palette also contains two pop-ups at the bottom of the palette. These header and footer pop-ups allow HexWeb XT to use external header and footer files, which are located in two folders in the Standards folder. These folders must be named "Headers" and "Footers", and reside under the "Standards", which is located in the selected root directory (in this exercise, "Archive") in order to be referenced by HexWeb XT and have all the Header and Footer HTML files you've placed there available for inclusion in your exported documents.

Note: To be able to see these two PopUps you have to have selected "External Headers and Footers " on in the Preferences.

Now you're ready to export your first HTML page from QuarkXPress!

Select the Item Tool in the QuarkXPress Tool palette.

6. Hold down the shift-key and select all the text and picture boxes in the order you want them to be exported, for example, headline-subheadline-text-picture-text.

Click the Export button in the HexWeb export palette.

Netscape will be launched automatically and you'll get an offline preview of the exported page.

When you look at the page in Netscape, you'll see that HexWeb XT has also added static elements like header logos and footer buttons to the page. To learn more about these features, see the Preferences section of this manual.

Note that HexWeb has shortened the folder and filenames to make it possible to create a Web server for use on Windows or UNIX platforms as well.
